Project Description

VISTAS features six women who were invited to Magrey’s studio to enact various gestures associated with femininity, sexuality, and positions of power found in women's media of her youth from the 1980s and 1990s. In the process, each woman portrays an exaggerated version of herself, expressing both a desire for freedom from social expectations as well as the internalization of various behaviors, styles, and attitudes prescribed for her throughout her life. The project explores the challenge of realizing one’s identity, and navigating the conflict between internal desires and social pressures. While each individual tells her own story, there’s a sense that we’re all in this together and that the future is full of possibility.

Featuring Aurelie Barbier, Renata Espinosa, Doreen Garner, Erica Magrey, Kate Scherer, and Xuan Juliana Wang and curated by Lindsay Howard.
