In each of us there exists an unspoken set of circumstantial rules and boundaries that governs our thoughts and our behavior, tipping the scales toward an outcome that was predetermined - not by a force entirely outside of oneself but by a localized personal mythology. The functionality of this governing body predisposes us to follow a predictable course of action in order to satisfy the status quo. For to rise above it is to offset the balance of expectation and result, disrupting the qualitative line that dictates the character of the central myth. In THIS IS NOT A MYTH, a series of scenarios and obstacle courses challenge the degree to which our mythology alternately obscures and illuminates meaning. Suggestions known as Oblique Strategies* become signposts, directing the path of the faithful. Influences come in the form of video games, protest movements, domestic décor, and murky love. Music serves as a fundamental tool in establishing emotional directionality and demarcates the struggles from the victories, fortifying the myth we strive to deny. *Developed by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt, 1975 Video Documentation |
